Once upon a time, in the continent of Ostorn, there was a town called Haven. After a deadly plague had ravaged the lands, a man decided to strike out and pave a new trade route to cities barred by a lack of roads and an abundance of natural blockades...
Welcome to the first past life plotting post of 2025! Sticks and Bones is a setting where player characters are the reincarnations of previous residents of the town that Aldric founded within the woods as a midway stop between cities on his new trade route. The continent of Ostorn and the world of Sticks and Bones is a magical land inspired by the Tales of series, among other games. Below in the comments are some explanations, locations and pre-existing NPCs who can be referenced!
Players with dropped characters are encouraged to include their dropped characters if only for potential backstory purposes for others, but it is not a requirement.

While we don't want to restrict things a lot, we must ask you keep the following in mind!
- Although this is a magical setting where plant-animals and beasts like the Guardians exist, characters must be human in their past life, with few exceptions. Please speak to the mods if you feel something else is better for your character.
- The level of technology was a bit skewed, but largely it was very basic electricity that just... happened to be magic. Light bulbs, the magic of indoor plumbing.
- Speaking of magic, while there are forms of magic such as enchantment and standard RPG mechanics, the Celestial magic that's been included in the game plot is not open to characters in their past lives.
- You are more than welcome to include new locations or expand on current ones, though if it is noted to reach out to a specific player about it, please do that. Ostorn is a large continent, and there is an even bigger world out there.
- The Goddesses are known, but very distantly as ancient history. Religion depends on the region, but Guardians, being demigod animals, are frequent objects of worship.
- Your past life should not be a 1:1 parallel to your current life! Things change, situations change, and the new reincarnations got off very badly actually.

Reasons for Joining the Grove: Percival was part of the original expedition, agreeing with Aldric's vision to expand trade, mostly for Medicine.
History: Once the expedition had settled and the Grove had sprung up, Percival focused his attention on working with Grace to further medicinal knowledge. Being in the Faewood however meant that there was illnesses science was woefully - in his opinion - ill-equipped to handle and thus turned his attention towards magic as a way to supplement and maybe even surpass scientific method.
While he wasn't working to bandaid scrapped knees, he took to being a sort of Grandfatherly figure to all who needed one who understood and didn't judge them. His couch was open to whomever needed it, and he would often have dinners with whichever children came over that night. He was unable to have children of his own, so took the role with great glee and gusto.
At some point in time he finally married his wonderful Lily while in the Grove, though Percival was a thinker of free love and extended his hand towards Dom as well.
When things started to go south, Lily was unfortunately corrupted and attacked Percival in his sleep. Though he survived, her corruption and death ultimately drove him mad with denial and grief, and he began to dig deeper into darker magic. Searching for ways to reverse the corruption, searching for means in which to bring the dead back to life, and ways to combat the Cult. Unfortunately whatever he found was not enough to save him, when he either challenged the Forest directly or attempted to make a deal with it in exchange for Lily, and he died for his transgressions.
Role: He was a Doctor of both scientific and magical means (once he began to figure it out) as well as sort of the defacto Grandpa to all who needed one.
Looking for: Friends, children who visited the most (A.B.A. was his pretty much adopted Granddaughter), those who were interested in joining him in magical healing.

Actually, now that I think about it, since A.B.A had a dad, I should try to figure out why PV would do that instead of him. I don't think they'd ever get mad at each other for her to take that role from him, but I could see him sadly passing away in her adulthood and PV taking over from there.

Place of Birth: The outskirts near the Emerald Sea
Reasons for Joining the Grove: Fleeing for his life haha oop
History: Alexi was born into a nomadic family troop who never stayed in more than one location for longer than a few days. While he didn't mind it at first, he grew tired and bored of the simple wandering life and moved into Haven permanently when he was able. There he grew a taste of what it meant to have power and people who worshiped him for his looks and skills, which he was keen to pick up on as it gave him various edges. He quickly grew a reputation for being a skilled man of relaxation; whether it was drugs, massage, or even his body on offer to help those with the means to pay him to relax.
Unfortunately this meant he attracted the attention of people in power who didn't like it when their perceived favorite thing was doing anything for anyone but them, and he quickly became embroiled in a nasty feud with several people. And while, at first, it was funny to stoke the fires between them to vie for his favor, it quickly meant he found himself in danger as it became nastier. So he fled Haven one night, taking what he could and slipping out under the cover of darkness, to join a caravan heading out to the established Grove.
Though it was definitely not the life he had grown accustomed too, he found his own sort of groove. At first it was simply by helping certain residents of the Grove find themselves in ways others may not approve of (makeup, outfits, breaking gender roles and helping them learn freedom of expression) he quickly found out there was more Power here to be had than even back home and he slipped swiftly into the role of Cultist towards The Black Sun.
And he worked tirelessly to do his God's bidding, including bringing others into the Cult and working to further their plans.
And when things began to fall apart? He took as many with him into the Forest as possible to offer himself and them up to their God, so he may use their souls as power. Unfortunately his soul was "saved" and whisked out of the world.
Role: Cultist and he quickly worked his way up towards Second Favorite (in his opinion). Curse Nene for being First Favorite.

Reasons for Joining the Grove: Jacob was born in the Grove. Not much else to it.
History: Jacob was born in the Grove at the tender age of newborn. Though he is a fraternal twin to his brother Caleb, he was born first by an hour, and thus took his older brother status very seriously. He was highly protective of Caleb, who was fae-touched, and would often fight the things Caleb said he could see. Even if to many others it looked like has swinging his wooden sword at thin air. Children at play to many adults, of course. Jacob himself saw nothing out of the ordinary, but completely accepted his brother could see things and believed him whole-heartedly. The Grove was sometimes weird, after all, why wouldn't Caleb see something? They were joined by Wren and would play together every day, quickly becoming fast friends.
As they grew older, Jacob's protectiveness didn't really wan, but he did try to mitigate it from becoming overbearing by joining up with the Grove's guards along side Wren. Now he had much more to protect and wasn't hovering over Caleb all day. He took to the role well and was a good soldier, helpful to those who needed it, and willing to follow orders without complaint. Though he respected Helputt as the Captain, for some reason he naturally gravitated towards Dom and was more inclined to following him and his orders. When Dom overthrew Aldric when Aldric began to go odd, Jacob backed his play.
He absolutely despised the Cult, and tried his best to root out as many of them as he possibly could. He said it was because "Gods" had no right to meddle in the affairs of humans - same as the Fae - but the real reason was the cults interest in his brother. While he would have rather seen the lot of them fall for it, he was more than willing to simply arrest them and let them be put on trial. Other than that, he tried his best to keep the peace where possible.
When the Grove began to fall to the monsters, Jacob did his best to protect those he could while fighting them off, joining the rest of the Guard. Eventually he managed to make his way back home in time to protect Caleb, though this unfortunately meant Caleb witnessed his brothers death protecting him.
Role: Guard and very protective "older" brother.
