January Plotting: Bitter Winds Howling

January is also a TDM month, so it’s the best time to think about who you may want to bring in or to enable the people you love who aren’t us.
New characters of preexisting players are welcome on this post, for the record!
A new past life plotting meme will be going up January 1st to ring in the new year as well, and hopefully the new format will make it more engaging.
We are going to set 2024 on fire and I am personally holding 2025 at gunpoint on all our behalf. Otherwise, we have a lot of really fun things planned for the year and we are greatly looking forward to playing things out with everyone together this year!
Also there is an end of year love meme for the game. This winter’s been hard. This year’s been hard. Let’s end it with a bit of love and joy.

SETTING UPDATES

Mayoi has built a shrine to Ourania, which doubles as a new home. It is placed in the formerly burnt town!
The weather is going to reach sub-zero temperatures, with raging snowstorms threatening one’s health if they stray too far from the indoors… though with how bitter cold it is, that may not help as much as you might want it to.
The river and lake are both completely frozen over, and not even Terho’s cabin has any light or presence to it. State of the seaborne and fish and Sinann? Frozen.
By nature of their magic, the fruit trees and blackberry bushes are still perfectly fine. It’s just a matter of getting to them at this point.
As the winter progresses, the cold encroaches further and further into where it should not be. Cups from the cabinets are frigid as ice, and any fires you try to keep burning flicker even as you stoke them and feel as if they could go out at any moment- Irene’s fireplace in the inn seems to be the only one that isn’t affected.

PLOT UPDATES

Characters will experience strange dreams of water and something trying to reach out. What could it mean? Great question!
New arrivals will find themselves struggling to get through the storm to safety, and will find themselves drawn to various buildings within the settlement. Hanging from their necks will be a pendant with a heavy snowflake amulet. While they wear these, the wraiths may use their voice to call for their sacrifice, and the new characters will feel incredibly cold even within the hottest places in town until they melt the amulet in a fire.
On top of the awful cold, the Grove and surrounding forest are once again under siege- though this time it doesn’t actually seem to be the Fallen Sun’s fault. The winter comes beckoned by the call of wraiths of frost and ice, and their presence only makes things worse.
They can be fought off with a partner or more- they’re much too strong to face alone- and for a time their defeat will abate the winds, but the howling blizzards return not long after. Working alone may cause a curse similar to last January to befall characters as well, where they slowly turn to ice unless saved by an act of true love (platonic or otherwise). The buddy system is the way to go!
(Mods will not be handling these fights, NPC the wraiths in battle as desired.)
All the while the wraiths call for a sacrifice. They do not elaborate on what they could possibly want, but “to stop this awful winter, sacrifices must be made”. Player characters must decide on their sacrifices and how they make them. The results will impact the end of the month with a small mini-event.

regarding the wraiths, what kinds of attacks will actually hurt them? does it need to be magic or projectiles, or will a good old-fashioned fisticuffs do anything?

You should probably not punch the wraiths! They are supernaturally cold, and while they're semi-tangible, it will be largely unpleasant and they will recover quickly. Also? Turbo frostbite, if you aren't careful.

Magic, projectiles or other weapons will work well, just not your hands!

Odile decided to make kagami mochi, just on the off chance that the spirits appreciate the thought. She made 10, one for each decade, since she has no idea how many spirits there are and making 100 seemed a little unhinged. Since she doesn't know of any specific temple or devotees to bring the offering to, she ventures out until she finds a suitable stone to leave the plate on and says a prayer before going back inside.

But TL;DR Dipper sacrifices a significant article of clothing from every "life".

Siffrin has no idea how sacrifices are supposed to be done here, so he just goes with what feels right. He takes one of the items he arrived with – a photo of himself alone in an otherwise empty room – and folds it in half, quietly whispering please stop, please stop, please stop into the fold of it, and then opens a window and lets the winter winds snatch it away.

Dys does not make any kind of sacrifice.

After being bullied by his husband to make a sacrifice :/ Gnosis will mumblemumble give them a written note of his favourite tea recipe that he makes all the time. Then he will go on a tangent about how he's the best at making tea so this is a good blend dammit.

Odile is also sacrificing a small pile of the spice from her father's home that she got on arrival with some happy childhood memories attached, along with a sprig of winterberries and the prayer Beiwe taught her.

Sesa: Sesa will be offering some of his finer metalcraft that he's been practicing making over the cold winter. He informs them proudly it's "one of a kind", even though some of them look like little more than metal lumps. It's still obvious he's proud of them.

CR: You know him, you love him, it's Joshua. The Grove's very own cryptid with a healthy interest in your business! Typically found not being found because he's invisibly popcorning over whatever drama may be happening (he doesn't have TV, he can't be blamed here) but when he's visible he's usually chilling with Revati (tiny star hedgehog). I am open for any and all CR with him please give it to me.

Plans: Joshua is going to be sipping tea in the inn because none of that going on outside is any of his business! He can probably be coaxed out to fight wraiths under certain circumstances, though. What are those circumstances? idk I guess you'll have to find out I'm not your strategy guide (I am, actually, just ask me)

CR: Clotted Cream is the Consul of the Crème Republic and a very respected politician. He's also a merperson because he's a Ryslig AU that doesn't remember Ryslig, and he's got sea dragon wings and tail now thanks to the baby dragons! He's been very quiet lately and I would very much love to get him back out there doing something and making friends now that (hopefully) my brain fog is starting to recede.

Plans: CC is likely going to...... get sick! Because while merpeople have a tendency to prefer colder temperatures, the shrimp part of him gets stressed during extreme cold and is more susceptible to illness. He's going to avoid going outside if he can help it and he's going to hole up in the cookie house while probably taking very warm soaking baths as often as possible and drinking lots of hot tea.

Character: Jiaoqiu
Canon: Honkai: Star Rail

CR: Jiaoqiu is a Foxian healer with a military medic background. He specializes in healing via food, though he is capable of first aid and emergency surgeries/trauma triage as well if needed. He's a shrewd and intelligent man that always seems to smile and has a generally pleasant and slightly mischievous vibe, though he knows exactly what negative effects certain medicines have and will use that as a weapon if necessary. He has a love for spicy foods and could probably do the one chip challenge without flinching.

I haven't got him out and about too much yet, but I'd love to extend his CR! Negative or positive, gimme gimme.

Plans: With the bitter cold setting in, Jiaoqiu is going to do what he does best: make warming food and drink for anyone taking shelter inside the inn. The food will probably be spicy. Spicy is warming. No he is not taking criticism at this time. He may also use his fire to attack the wraiths if he has anyone to team up with - he's a healer after all, not a one man wrecking crew like Feixiao, and he wouldn't go out alone regardless.

CR: Affogato is a former Cookie who was once upon a time Dark Cacao Cookie's Royal Advisor. He clawed, scraped, and ~~poisoned~~ potioned his way to get to that position. And though he was very willing to feed into Cacao's paranoia and control via puppeting him, as well as let outer tribes starve (fuck you Coffee Village), he was actually really decent at his job. His job was to run the day to day of the Citadel and given what he had to work with, he did well enough! Plus he showed actual care for a) his disciples and b) the workers, asking Cacao to be easier on them.

However, when offered More Power he gladly took it and betrayed Cacao for the Crown, then was forced to flee.

Here in Stix: He's made up with Cacao and has re-pledged his loyalty via friendship instead. Which they're working on. He's taken over as Mizuki's Commander but uhm, has also grown feelings for the jellyfish which is very annoying cause he becomes very possessive and he does not like sharing. So you can imagine. With Fel gone he's taken over the Bath House as well, and is working to turn it into more of a parlor for relaxation. Massage, acupuncture, soaking. Whatever your needs. Plus he will do your makeup and hair for you, geezus please let him.

He's TRYING to be on his best behavior but it's so hard to be good when you still want Power and the Thing In The Forest Offers It. He's somewhat mollified by joining Cacao's Dragon Egg Helper Party and, in return, being given a boon. He now has better vision and better balance, which he will be using to his advantage for things. It came with a tail so. Watch Out He Will Flirt With It.

Plans: He's been experimenting with the flora and fauna of this world in making incense and tinctures. He would rather like to start trying them on people, but it's really hard to get someone to just down a random ass concoction without questions. That isn't Beat. There's not much he can do with Winter and this Bullshit happening, but hey. Maybe he can make more warming draughts like he did with the Eggs. They're gonna need them.

Though he spent the first of Callan's Blessings on a small hoard of exquisite jewelry and trinkets, he has 3 other wishes to use, which he might use one on helping give the Wraiths their sacrifice. Listen, he's a Witch. Sacrificing to Nature and the Things That Rule It is something he's been doing for most of his life. It matters not, you give thanks and offer life to those that give you life in return. And it doesn't matter what that sacrifice may be.

Character: Pure Vanilla Cookie
Canon: Cookie Run: Kingdom

CR: PV is a former Cookie turned Human turned Minotaur, whose blind as fuck and can only see via the connection he shares with his Seeing Eye Staff. That Kinda Has a Personality of It's Own Which May or May Not Be an Actual Evil Beast From The Past. It's a whole thing. He is kind, sweet, and ridiculously self-sacrificial. He also refuses to believe in his own abilities despite being shockingly powerful, preferring to stay a humble healer.

That being said he will use this abilities to kick ass in defense of his loved ones if need be.

He recently died and had his healing magic ripped from him, so he's sort of spiraling but also determinedly switching his focus to medicine he can make. He used to be Immortal but he broke apart his soul jam and gifted it to Beiwe, Ourania and used the rest to resurrect Aurora. Now he's very much Mortal and slowly dying of Oripathy that he gave himself to study it. Please read above to the self-sacrificial thing. He spends most of his time in the Clinic, teaching others how to heal, researching Oripathy, crocheting gifts, helping Livio with the School, gardening- no he doesn't sleep.

Plans: He will not be giving of himself via sacrifice for the Wraiths! I know! Weird! But you see, he promised Cacao and Lily that he wouldn't anymore. He gave this world the Truth, he infected himself with Oripathy, he's corrupted (which is slowly sinking in further, those Daffodils sure look beautiful and healthy and so thick clustered around his neck! No he doesn't hear Suri cause of protection but-) and he's very tired. Mortality does that to a 2000+ year old man. BUT he will AID OTHERS in fighting off the Wraiths! As well as healing any frostbite that might occur. Also be trying to get everyone to cluster into the Inn around the undying flame there. Body warmth helps keep everyone warm too.

Canon:Guilty Gear

CR: A.B.A is the local socially inept homunculus who loves keys, married key, and will kill you over keys. She started her life alone, locked up in a mansion for ten years, so she's terrified of everything. To make up for this, she tries to act superior, that she knows what she's doing, and oh god please believe her she's trying so hard. A.B.A woke up to a world that's still recovering from a war that nearly killed all of humanity, so things have been.......tough. Her main goal in life is finding a way to give her husband a human body so she can live out all her happy marriage fantasies.

Although A.B.A comes off as aggressive, she would rather avoid confrontation. She makes friends easier with people who just ignore her weird posturing and accept that A.B.A's just gonna A.B.A.

Plans: Oh boy, I probably picked the worst time for this, but it's gonna be baby's first investigation. PV got her curious about notes and shit, so she's gonna drag Beat off to see if past her left anything behind.

As for Wraiths, PLEASE let her fight with you! She has a giant ass key again! She would be a great battle buddy! Sacrifice-wise, she's a stubborn thing who hates when people try to take what she considers hers, so she will be very against the idea in general. It'll just fuel her to fight them off more. No touch.

And, of course, A.B.A is still going strong on her dragon bullshit. Chances are, when she isn't fighting, she will be more inclined to watch over the babies during this difficult time. If SHE'S cold, she imagines they're much colder!! She'll also be very sad that the cold means she can't use her wings as much. ):

Past Life Plotting Toplevel: Over here!! I actually went into more stuff recently, I guess I should've waited lmao. I'll be sure to rehash it and make it more organized for the new post, but until then, enjoy me overthinking everything.

Character: Dipper Pines
Canon:Gravity Falls (CR AU)
CR: Once upon a time Dipper and his twin sister Mabel were sent off to spend the summer with their weird great uncle Stan at his house-turned-tourist-trap in the woods. While Dipper figured it would be a boring, annoying summer, he uncovers a secret journal about the supernatural and from then on, the whole family is dragged into nonstop supernatural shenanigans, mysteries, and danger. After surviving an apocalypse orchestrated by a trillion year old chaos demon, the twins get back on the bus home at the very end of the summer.

Instead of waking up in Piedmont, California, Dipper wakes up in Deerington, Maine and then spends the next two-to-three years surviving in a horror setting. Deerington, being a nightmare dimension constructed by a dying eldritch girl, does eventually fall apart and dissolve, which leads to the people there waking up in Trench instead, aka Deer Country. Newly awakened and semi-eldritch, the people of Deerington learn to navigate the new world they're meant to build new lives in. Dipper spends a lot of this time pretty content. He has his family, he has a setting steeped in the occult to explore and learn in, and he's growing up in a setting that lets him really pursue his interests without backlash. However, their family starts slowly falling apart after the ocean begins calling them back to the sea. Stan first, and then the twins, leaving Ford alone. Bummer.

Sticks: Dipper wakes up in the Grove after spending [??????] time bobbing around in an eldritch ocean as a squid and finds, oh no! He's here all alone without his family! Something he's never dealt with before! His start here is a little rocky because he is genuinely not sure what to do with himself and doesn't trust his own ability to make friends, but hey, it turns out, this place is full of freaks and he realizes pretty fast that making friends here was super easy because he too, is a freak. Rad. Eventually his uncle turn up, too and he's even happier. They have a house in the woods now just north of what used to be the burned town.

Plans: The cold sucks? And Dipper knows better than to go out into horror winter since the last time he was in a place that got this cold, frost zombies were terrorizing the place and killing everyone so, Dipper is actually going to try and behave for once and stay out of trouble. THAT SAID if anyone gets caught out in the winter over by the Pines house, expect to be dragged in probably. As for Sacrifices, Dipper has An Idea about what to do with that so he will likely be plotting with his family. Stay tuned!! otherwise I am open to shenanigans!!

Canon: Ensemble Stars!!
CR: Ensemble Stars takes place in a mostly normal modern Tokyo, but it's a Tokyo that's a little to the left. There's an insane amount of importance placed on the Idol Industry and zaibatsus are still legal for some reason?? There is also an entire clan of exiled people living under the ground and has been there for a few centuries. That would be Mayoi's family, who've been driven underground before the introduction of the koseki (aka the family registry), leaving Mayoi and his family largely undocumented people without citizenship and rights. What does little Mayoi do once he realizes he loves the sounds of singing that often filter down below? He decides to become an idol.

Boy howdy was that more than he bargained for. Either way through some insane miracle on his and his family's part, Mayoi has papers (fake) and gets into one of the most prestigious idol schools, and does his best to live a life on the surface. He gets assigned to a unit, and they get put through an insane trial-by-fire in order to keep their jobs, it all goes well and their group is starting to gain traction!

And then Mayoi ends up in Austice, which was a hellish, cold little European-style village that was full of horrors. He has a very poor time there, but he does get to spend a lot of time with people he likes, so /weighs hands. In the end, he doesn't entirely know his fate, because he remembers going off to do something in secret in the woods and then. Nothing else. He assumes he is probably turbodead!

Mayoi in Sticks is slowly building a new life for himself here. November was very good for him actually between the dragon parents plot and his appointment as moon priest, he finally has some direction and outlet for all his nervous energy. He's gotten the shrine up!! Come visit!!

Plans: Mayoi is going to go talk to Ydalir about getting a hold of some magical burning lanterns that might resist the cold so he can help bring anyone lost in the snow back to the shrine to rest. He will be doing his best to keep it warm in there the best he can, and have it be open for people to rest while the storm wages on.

He does not like this business of sacrifices. After Austice's sacrificial coffin gacha, he does not trust these wraiths intentions with something like that so he will be very wary of making any kind of sacrifice.

CR: Sesa's the Grove's local Chuuni and weapon's smith, who has his own workshop that he both lives and works out of with his fiance, Passenger. Sesa kindof got hit with a bat a the month prior because said fiance fucking died and he was angy about it, and while he's still not Fully Over It, he's doing a lot better. Sesa is a puppydog of a person but he holds one hell of a grudge when it comes to people he cares about, even if he doesn't necessarily fully realize it. So, yaknow, something to bring up during therapy. He's really happy about all the new "Vouivre" in the Grove, which is being balanced out by how fucking cold it is. He HATES the cold and this cold is going to make him want to just live under his kotatsu forever thanks.

He has also been thinking ahead about ~marriage plans~, especially since Passenger died since he's afraid that if he keeps waiting he'll die for real and then he'll be a WIDOW-

Plans: Sesa was here for when the true-love-kiss thing happened last time and he was not a fan! Like he already hates the cold weather but like, cmon. Granted it was what kindof kickstarted him into realizing "oh shit I have feelings for this motherfucker", so it's a double edged sword, truly. He's not really had much of a chance to get to play with his grenade launcher so he'll definitely be out and about helping to cull the wraiths, so if anybody wants to team up and blow up shit he's your guy. Otherwise he will be curled up in a thousand blankets and whining about how cold it is (and also playing videogames).

Character: Nicholas D. Wolfwood

Canon: Trigun Stampede

CR: Wolfwood is a faux Priest/assassin for hire who likes to try to make everyone think he's just some big asshole when, in reality, he cares way too much and honestly the fact he cares as much as he does is the reason for 99% of the problems in his life. He owns the dilapidated Church that's sometimes mentioned where many, many pigeons live, including the God King Pigeon who likes to visit from time to time. Zahliya also lives there too, he's the Church Gargoyle Who Perches. He's a prickly guy who's often hard to get close to if you don't know him well, but anyone who does know Wolfwood knows he's a good guy deep down. He's also got a massive cross-shaped gun he carries around called the Punisher, though most often it's wrapped up in belts and tarp until he actually needs to use it.

Plans: Wolfwood, surprise-not-surprise, got himself corrupted in an altercation with Vash lateee October I believe was when that happened? He didn't realize it at the time, nor did he realize it until the day he was tasked to give out presents, but he was slowly showing signs mainly in the way his hair was just growing at an uncontrollable rate until he finally sprouted ears and a tail and was like "okay fuck something's wrong". Ain brought Zahliya over the same day to burn the corruption out (Wolfwood was unconscious when this happened, otherwise he would have just fuckin' left), so he at this moment is no longer corrupted. However, he would have told his close CR about this regardless, so if you'd like to thread this out please let me know! I'm happy to handwave it but otherwise anyone close would absolutely be aware so you're welcome to assume you just Know about it. Anyway it wasn't a fun time and kindof soured things, but he's going to go apologize to the dragons for being an idiot and get dragon boons yaaay! I'm probably going to give him horns and a tail so look forward to that.

As for the event proper, Wolfwood has ~trauma~ in regards to this level of sheer cold and people freezing to death since Vash died in his arms last year, so he's going to be more than a little testy and absolutely wanting to go shooting wraiths (can you shoot a wraith with a gun). While I wish I could say he'd be smart enough not to make the same mistake twice, he is going to be wanting to burn off some steam and might not be considering that he needs to be working with someone to avoid the chill, so I'm down to play with that if anybody wants!

Not Seeking: Nothing severe, no death or nothin' like that, if Wolfwood starts to freeze we can thread him recovering instead of blowing up etc etc. He also has I think 4 vials left on him currently which can be popped in an emergency if needed.

CR: Sparkling is a side-character in Cookie Run Kingdom and I am one of his five biggest fans. He's a CRAU from the game formerly known as Ryslig, in which he's a Vampire/Honduran White Bat! Info on what he looks like/his general abilities are on his profile, but here in the Grove he works at Luca's bar and tends to just kindof vibe and try to do the best he can for everyone. He's currently dating Clotted Cream who he was dating in his past life, it's all very gay, etc.

Plans: I NEED TO DO MORE WITH SPARKLING I just don't have any super solid plans for him rn...he's not combat oriented at all re: the event, but given that he IS a healer and his healing drinks work here, I would like to play with that if anybody finds themselves getting hurt and needs help in a pinch/can't get to the clinic in a reasonable amount of time! He also makes a mean hot chocolate so, yaknow, it'll keep you warm.

CR: Self-proclaimed "leader" and weird animal enthusiast/tamer - it's Enciodes! He's a diplomat with a bleeding heart and a brain full of violence, so y'know, fun stuff incoming, I'm sure!
Plans:

So here's! The thing. Enciodes has been quietly plotting things on his own for some time about attacking the forest in winter, thanks to his experience last year wrt the forest falling asleep. Obviously, I want him to coordinate doing this with the Grove, as he wouldn't think it fair to not offer that to everyone, with sufficient warning about consequences of doing so - namely, they could die. Obviously if there's enough interest, I'd wanna work with the mods! This isn't something that's going to succeed or anything, and Enciodes might even state as much depending on his audience - his goal in the end is gaining information more than anything else.

So! If you don't mind leaving a comment here maybe so I can take an interest headcount? Obviously if you wanna put more than one of ur blorbos in just lmk.
